I'll just admit right off: I'm not a good cook. It's not that I can't cook, it's just that I'm not very adventurous or creative in the kitchen. My kids could tell you that our dinners consist too often of chicken, rice (or noodles) and green beans. My schedule doesn't allow me much time to improve on my culinary skills, either. As a working, commuting (four HOURS every day) mother of two toddlers, it's a real chore every night to get a meal on the table AND be able to spend some quality time with my family before bedtime. I am however, lucky enough to be able to spend at least part of my daily commute on the subway, which gives me ample time to read. It was during a commute home one day, while reading a novel where the heroine described making beef stroganoff and my stomach rumbled that I thought, "Hey, I could make that." And then another idea came: What if I tried creating dishes and meals based on or inspired by the books I'm reading and started a blog about it? It would be part book club, part cooking class.
I don't know if anyone will read this blog. I hope they do. But I hope even more that it helps get me and my family out of our dinnertime rut and expand our palates, not to mention our library.
